L.A. Reid was born Antonio M. Reid on June 7, 1956 in Cincinnati, Ohio to his mother, Emma Reid. In high school, he enjoyed playing the drums and went on to join several bands. His nickname was quickly given after a friend saw him wearing an L.A. Dodgers t-shirt. Reid was first married to Perri “Pebbles” Reid in 1989, but the marriage ended in divorce after seven years due to complications with his management of the music group, TLC.

In 2011, Reid worked as a judge on the television show, The X-Factor and held his position for two seasons. The same year that he joined the show, he was promoted to the chairman and CEO of Epic Records, but left The X-Factor to focus more on his career at the record label.
