During World War II, Haefner sold wood gas-powered automobiles. After switching his focus to applications in the ’70s, he got what became a 24.8 percent position in Islandia, New York-based CA, the world’s second-biggest manufacturer of mainframe computer applications. Haefner was also a breeder and rider of thoroughbreds. Among his horses, Go And Go, won the 1990 Belmont Stakes in Elmont, Ny. He also possessed a share of Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown winner. Haefner founded Amag in January 1945 on Zurich’s lakefront and the business grew to become Switzerland’s biggest car dealership and primary importer of Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda and Audi vehicles, according to its web site. In the early ’60s, Haefner went Amag’s bookkeeping and payroll to an International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) system and began Automation Center AG, a computer services company, as reported by Forbes in 2000. Interestingly, Haefner never learned basic computer skills, in accordance with Forbes. He did, however, participate in riding thoroughbreds during his possessing/breeding days. Haefner acquired a love for thoroughbreds after his first ride on a racehorse in Paris in 1959, allegedly saying, “I adored it, the sense of speed on a horse.” The earliest billionaire on the planet passed away on June 19, 2012 at the age of 101.
