Produced in Hemet, California, Jeff Van Gundy grew up in Brockport, Ny, and is the son of a former school basketball coach. He started his training career in the mid-80s, training a Rochester-based high school basketball team. Then he served as an assistant trainer at multiple schools, including Providence College and Rutgers. He was hired as assistant trainer for the New York Knicks in 1989, and served in that capacity for another seven years. He became head coach in 1996, as well as the team was exceptionally successful under his order. He stepped down in 2001 as well as the team is not the same since. He trained the Houston Rockets for four seasons, but was mostly unsuccessful and was later let go. He sometimes serves as an analyst on ESPN.
