Boyd attended machinist trade school and finished a three-year apprenticeship in machining. In 1968, he moved to California where he assembled hot rods by day and worked as a machinist at Disneyland by nighttime. Boyd shortly became known for constructing exceptional hot rods and in 1977 he started his own store, Hot Rods by Boyd, in Cypress, California. Coddington was known for his clean, tasteful designs joining old school with what was to be known as the “Boyd Look”. It featured drastically transformed classic styling, but reengineered around modern and scrape-assembled parts in the client ‘s inclination.

Among Coddington’s trademark inventions was his custom-fabricated alloy wheels, usually machined from a solid billet of 6061 hammered aluminum, an industry first. Jointly with John Buttera, Boyd initiated this billet machined appearance and used it not only to wheels, but liberally through the vehicle. In 1988, Coddington founded Boyd’s Wheels, Inc., to produce and promote his custom billet wheels. His popularization of machined billet wheels had wide-ranging impact, eventually spreading from the hot rod world to tremendously affect the popularity of custom rims inside the hip hop culture. Coddington was hospitalized on December 31, 2007 and discharged soon after New Year’s Eve, but was readmitted a couple of days later. Doctors performed operation, but Coddington expired on February 27, 2008. His publicist released a statement that Coddington was a longtime diabetic who died from complications which were brought on from a recently available operation for a perforated colon, along with sepsis and kidney complications.
